In 1996 a small group of individuals formed the Grand Isle Fishing Rodeo to establish a three-day fishing tournament during Memorial Day weekend to be held at Bridge Side Marina.  The group decided to have couples as Charter members to run and execute the fishing rodeo.  At that time, it was the only rodeo in Grand Isle with an equal number of men and women as directors.  Our first rodeo had a total of 92 participants and it has grown tremendously from there. 

    

Our Mission Statement established at that time was the same as it is today:  "To promote the sport of fishing in Grand Isle, Louisiana and help make positive changes in our community."  That Mission statement has been upheld throughout the years.  Grand Isle, Louisiana should be considered the Speckled Trout Capital of the world since there are more speckled trout captured on a daily basis in Grand Isle than any other location in the world.  In 1999 we re- addressed our goals for the rodeo, started promoting Speckled Trout fishing and renamed the rodeo "The Grand Isle Speckled Trout Rodeo." 

 

With the help of the Secretary of State, the overall winner of the rodeo is deemed the Louisiana State Speckled Trout Master Angler.  This distinction, and the fact that it is the only rodeo on Grand Isle run by couples, makes the Grand Isle Speckled Trout Rodeo unique and exceptional.

    

We would like to welcome our past participants and future ones to join us in perhaps the most competitive Speckled Trout fishing competition in the world.  Individuals who win this competition can truly say they are the best of the best when it comes to Speckled Trout fishing!  Anyone winning a crystal trophy for Largest Speckled Trout Male, Female and/or Master Angler has achieved what no one else in the state has.

 

Although the emphasis is on Speckled Trout,  in addition to 8 daily Speckled Trout trophies, we award three places in Redfish, Flounder, Sheepshead, Ling, Mangrove Snapper, Red Snapper, Drum, White Trout, and Rat Reds (27" and under).   " Take a Kid Fishing"  for our special Youth Division (12 & under): categories are Speckled Trout, Redfish and Hard Head Catfish.  It gets pretty competitive and these youngsters will be the future Louisiana State Speckled Trout Master Angler!
